Obituary of John Mason Trepanier

John Mason Trepanier passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2020 at the age of 63 due to complications from a head injury. He is survived by his children, Jonathon Trepanier, and wife Erin, of New Canaan, CT; Taylor Trepanier, and wife Kim, of New York City, NY; and Kelly Noelle, of CT; as well as three grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother Mary Ellen Trepanier of Scottsdale, AZ and his sisters; Michele Figueiredo, of Atlanta, GA, and Denise Trepanier of Eugene, OR. John was born in Boston, MA, and spent a good part of his youth in Hong Kong, where he met the mother of his children, Karen Heck, as a student at Hong Kong International School. Following his father’s footsteps, he graduated from Northeastern University. John worked on Wall Street as a stock broker beginning his career with Merrill Lynch. Always entrepreneurial, he was a part of many start-ups ranging from restaurants (Christer’s and Knödel of NYC) to a virtual reality company. John always enjoyed a challenge and long odds. He had a love for sports and games. He played baseball and rugby (a game he found in HK). He was thrilled to have each of his children play rugby, becoming a surrogate member of the GHS and Babson rugby communities. He had an affinity for bridge, cribbage, gin rummy (especially on the commute) many a board game, and was an accomplished billiards player. He felt a calling for sailing, so much so that he waited to sail in the winds of hurricane Hugo. Barbecuing, fishing, & family game night all remind us of Dad/John. However, nothing reminds us more of him than fire and fireworks with a tad of mischief. It would be an understatement to say we did Fourth of July firework shows. Please picture a 4” steel tube to launch the mortars from, thousand shot cakes and a cigar to light them with (I’m sure it’s all legal somewhere). In typical John fashion, random fireworks went off outside of his hospital window in the moments of his final goodbyes. A dancer that needed no dance floor, a singer without a band, and a welcomed devil’s advocate— John had a true passion for people and life. Outward bounding, parachuting, globetrotting, card counting, pedal to the metal, ski racing; a true risk taker. The risk taking challenged many long-term relationships, but at his core John was a kind and caring person. Early lessons for his children were giving up seats to those in need on trains, holding doors, helping strangers and offering a hello.
