Cedrick certainly knew how to make me laugh.
Cedrick and I seemed to be destined to cross paths multiple times in our lives. I first noticed Cedrick on the campus Lehigh University. His strong fashion sense made him stand out. The cargo pants, awesome t-shirts, spiky hair, cool sneakers, and trench coat made it clear that he was not a conformist.
I made friends with his roommate via the mountain bike club. I remember stopping by their apartment and Cedrick was playing SimCity with about 5 people standing around him watching. I wanted to stand and watch too, but it was too crowded already.
I do not recall the first time Cedrick and I met and talked. It was probably at one of their parties. We would have instantly hit it off since we were both Computer Science majors who loved comics and movies.
I got a job at the Multimedia Lab. A short time before Cedrick graduated in 1993, I gave him a tour of the lab showing him the bleeding edge stuff we were creating. His eyes lit up and he said, “This is what I want to do with my life!”
We both got jobs in NYC so it made sense we should be roommates. I introduced Cedrick to rollerblading. He had no fear his first-time rollerblading when we skated the entire circumference of Central Park. He fell going fast down a big hill, then slide hundreds of feet on his kneepads, elbow-pads, and wrist-braces. Unhurt, he got up and proclaimed, “That was fun!”
His Lehigh roommates Geordie and Jeff were also some of the nicest people I have ever met. How can three such amazing people all be roommates, and all become my friend. The four of us hung out one weekend at our NYC apartment. Cedrick’s idea was to cover the walls in poster paper and provided crayons and markers. That unleashed our creative juices. We played a game where one person would draw a squiggle, then challenge someone else to transform that squiggle into something.
Eventually we went our separate ways, but we kept in touch, and our paths crossed again when he started MediaBubble. He needed a web developer and I just happen to be one.
When I moved to Malaysia to marry my love, he was living in Hong Kong, so when he decided to take a vacation, it was a no brainer to come visit me and my wife.
Cedrick always had cool ideas for various personal projects, and I tried to contribute when I could. He wanted a way to convert live-action video into the style of a comic book. I worked on that for a long time but failed to get the look he desired.
Who knows what other projects we would have collaborated on together in the future.
Cedrick never hurt my feelings. He was always supportive and understanding. We never fought. He had a great sense of humor and a wonderful laugh. I never knew that he loved to dance. I would have loved to start a mosh-pit with him. Cedrick definitely lived life to the fullest. He certainly had 20 times more friends than I did, because people were drawn to him. I will always be inspired by his drive and enthusiasm. He lives on in my heart and soul.

I was introduced to an entire new world the day I met Cedric Chan. I was around eleven or so and my older sister worked with his mom Lily at the YMCA. Ced was a year older and Selwyn was a year younger, so they thought I would fit right in. Entering the Chan home for the first time was magnificent, the smell, colors, artwork, were a complete contrast to my Italian home. The magic of the bedroom both brothers shared was intoxicating. Marvel Comics, video games, dungeons and dragons, musical instruments, and action figures! I was in heaven. Cedric was a little weary to let some random kid into his paradise but by the end of that first day we three had bonded. When the Chan’s moved from Hope Street to just off High Ridge Road we were practically neighbors. Summers playing Laser Tag, D&D, and Metroid on Nintendo for hours on end were exactly what growing up in the 1980s was all about. High School, College, Careers, we grew up and life was ever changing. But we always had our memories of youth. When I bumped into Peter at Grade A market last year I learned Cedrics tragic story. The last time I spoke with Ced he was leaving Lucasfilm, so I was shocked about his situation. Cedric has now entered into the greatest adventure of all, the unknown end of life. Knowing Cedric he is continuing his search for that nirvana that can only truly exist in an elevated place. To his wonderful family, Lily, Peter, Selwyn. I send you peace to overcome all of your anguish for the last 7 years. Cedric lives on within all who knew and loved him.

Cedrick,
Always admired your upbeat and energetic passion. Although we didn't get to spend a whole lot of time together, I enjoyed the times that I got to interact with you. I know you will be watching with our Heavenly Father and celebrating all the good and perfect things. Thank you for all the lives you've touched and let us celebrate as you enter His Kingdom.

Dearest Ced,
Gentle words cannot make known the depth of sadness that comes with your passing. Though we may live a continent away, our thoughts and prayer have been with you often, for our memories of you began since your birth, formed by the many visits we made to Connecticut, when Mark and Stephanie were but children and when you & Selwyn would all play at the family house. You’ve grown to achieve much and touched the lives of many. In many ways you were larger than life, in some ways like the Great American dream personified. Thank you for being an inspiring role model. Now we hope that your spirit may be laid to rest and that you may find peace after your long journey. For though your life may have been short, you've lived more than most and twice as fast.
With love,
Thomas, Irene, Mark and Stephanie Ho

First, my condolences to the Chan family.
I had the good fortune of meeting and getting to know Cedric in Beijing in 2009 working together on a personal project. Cedric was an intelligent and kind friend full of humanity and humor, with an absolute joy for life! When meeting up with Cedric you knew that you were in for either an interesting conversation or a wonderfully fun and funny experience, usually a combination of all three. His dancing and warm smile could disarm even the unlikeliest of strangers! You have been and will be missed old friend! I send a big virtual hug as you move on to the next phase to infinity and beyond!

Cedrick was always on a transcendent path of self discovery. With boundless energy, curiosity, and a certain naivety, he engaged in the world around him and always shaped it to conform to his vision of what could be. I had my first opportunity to get to know Cedrick when we worked together to help our friend Walter Mcdaniel complete his animated trailer in Beijing ten years ago at a studio named Xing Xing. We immediately sensed an affinity towards one another having both worked at Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light and Magic previously in our careers. Our bond continued to grow as we worked together on such diverse projects that included things like script writing, city building projects, collaborating with China Film Group’s animation studio, shooting live action productions, and developing educational programming for Ced’s Digital Art Dept which he chaired at the graduate school, International Technological University. We got to share offices and living spaces, business acquaintances and eventually many friends. Throughout it all, Cedrick projected a generosity of spirit and infectious, energetic, positive approach to all his endeavors from the monumental to the mundane. The guy had the ability to light up any room in the company of complete strangers and captivate its audience with entertaining antics and a passion for dancing. As with all of his passions he was eager to share the wealth of his immersions whether it be Steve Jobs and Apple products, Comic Books and his beloved Iron Man, his penchant for public speaking and education, or his desire to draw deeply from the wellsprings of foreign cultures. He was a smart guy with a good sense of taste. He was curious about every new technological trend and would often be the first to acquire them as soon as they were released. He was one to pay attention to his appearance through fashion and health, but would be the first one to find humor in how he came off. As he maintained his strict diet and workout, he would celebrate his “cheat” day one day out of the week where anything goes and everyone was invited along for the ride. He was inclined to forge strong bonds of friendship with those that he knew and highly valued the support they gave him in return. Through it all he was guided by a personal moral compass and strong sense of decency that made him empathetic to everyone he shared his world with. As I look back at my days with Cedrick, I can remember him as always being deep in thought, but one didn't need to wait long before eventually that charming, boyish smile would radiantly break out across his face.
My World has become a lot sadder without Ced.
