shelley verses posted a condolence
Sunday, October 7, 2018
Dear Mr. Cingari, Rosemary, Johnny, Michael, Tommy, David, and Mary Catherine,
I was deeply saddened today when I heard of Mrs. Cingari's passing. She was one of the first "Moms" in my young childhood that inspired me to help others. She managed, not only her growing family, but all of their friends, and the entire
Grade-A Market tribe.
I was only 4 years old when we moved from Shippan Avenue to 46 Stamford Avenue. When the Cingari's were building their new house across the street from mine, I was counting the days til move in! We already knew Mr. and Mrs. Cingari from the store. My life was so exciting when the kids moved in!
Cathy Cingari's hoyse was a bit different from ours, but as a child, I couldnt wait to get in there! I would do what ever she needed 'help wise'
even if it was helping with the laundry...because when she started to laugh, so did we!
Her laugh was very contagious!
Sometimes she would be 'trying' to repremand the boys, and Tommy would 'start up'.
Mrs. Cingari was adorable! One day she was laughing and yelling at the same time...
running up the stairs after Tommy.
When I went across the street to my house and told my Mom, she picked up the phone, called Cingari's and said, " Cath, what happened? "
Then next thing I heard was my mother in the kitchen cracking up!
When my brother Greggy began to crawl and walk, he apparently loved to climb.
One day he opened the dishwasher, climbed into the top rack and onto the countertop.
He opened the cupboard and downed a bottle of baby aspirin, and I dont know what else.
Thats when Chickie Verses flipped!
She calls, no one other than Cathy Cingari.
I was home. I could hear Mrs. Cingari on the phone calmly instructing my Mom to get her spagetti pots and bath towels out.
Cathy ran over with baby Mary Catherine, for me to watch. I was fixated on Mrs. C.
She brought over a small bottle of syrup of ipecac. She administered it to Gregg, who within 10 minutes voided the contents of his little tummy into those pots.
Mrs. Cingari cleaned up Gregg while my Mom cleaned the kitchen.
Then the kids took a nap in their Mom's arms while Cathy shared more 'first aid' info. I loved every minute I could be around her.
It was Mrs. Cingari that sat me down to explain that she wasnt "leaving" me, when she was simply moving up the street to Fairview Avenue.
She arranged a day for our Italian babysitter Rosann Scorese to stop by immediately after the move.
"Nana" ( Mrs. Scorese ) walked the stroller with my new baby sister Barbara and I up to Cingari's new house. Mrs. Cingari herself walked me through the house, room by room.
I was barely listenly to who's room was who's.
I just missed her.
Then she said the magic sentence: "Shell, as soon as the new kitchen table gets here, you will be over for supper...I'm just alittle farther up the street now, that's all!"
I had to hear it from her, not anyone else. I felt heard, loved, and safe with Mrs. Cingari. No matter how busy she was, I always got a kiss goodbye.
We learned manners from each orhers families as children. As adults in my 30's, 40's and 50's to see Mr. and Mrs. Cingari, who were ageless and always beautiful and young to me, I felt again like seen, heard and safe. During these adult chats my mind would see her in the Stamford Avenue house, calling all the kids in for supper... I got hugged, spoke about my Mom, heard that contagious laugh and got my kiss goodbye.
I thank you all for the beautiful memories I hold of your ray of Light, your wife and Mom.
I am sending you my warmest Blessings.
I love you,
Love,
Shelley Verses

I have just received the news today of the passing of Dear Cathy. I am so very saddened by the news. She was one of the most precious women I have ever known.
We use to spend a lot of time together in the early years, when as married couples, we were involved in the Christian Family Movement of The Catholic Church.
I worked quite a lot with Cathy on the Star Of The Sea Christmas Workshops, and other parish activities. I so enjoyed being with her in The Shippan Point Garden Club, and the activities of being Moms to Fairfield Prep students.
Cathy was so generous, loving and kind to me, all through our years of being neighbors and friends.
I will look forward to seeing her again, along with all the others in Heaven, some day.
Save a spot for me, Cathy. I know you will be up front and center in the Eyes Of The Lord.
Love always,
Terry Evans
