Obituary of John C. Vossler

John “Jack” Charles Vossler, Jr. of Stamford, CT passed away peacefully late in the night of Wednesday, November 22, 2017. Born in New York City to John Sr. and his wife, Martha, Jack moved with his parents and five siblings to Stamford at age eight and spent much of his childhood playing in the fields, beaches and coves near his home on Rippowam Road. He was 16 when his mother died in 1942, and to help support his family he left school to work fixing typewriters. Two years later, Jack was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to the war in Europe with the 66th Infantry Division. After Germany’s surrender, he helped maintain the typewriters with which the history of the war was written. In 1954, with his partner, the late Steven Hagedus, Jack co-founded Business Machine Service Co., which was to become a staple of the Stamford business community for over 55 years, and while growing the business Jack also earned his GED and pursued and obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Bridgeport. He was an active member in River Hill Ski Club, helping to build the group’s Vermont lodge in 1959, as well as an avid tennis player, and for many years coached boys’ baseball and soccer. For 45 years Jack and his wife, Jane, lived in Rowayton, where they raised their two sons, John III and Ben. Jack was predeceased by his parents, brothers James and Harold, and sister, Catherine Suech. In addition to Jane, John, and Ben, Jack is survived by his granddaughter, Morgan; his brother, Robert of Fairfield; his sister, Carolyn Martin of Milford and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 30th, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 1200 Shippan Ave., Stamford, CT 06902. Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery, Darien. No calling hours will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady Star of the Sea, St. Gabriel’s Church at 914 Newfield Avenue, Stamford CT 06905, or the Honor Flight Network (www.HonorFlight.org).
