Obituary of Kathleen T. Uva

Kathleen T. Uva, age 91, of Heritage Village, Southbury, CT formerly of Stamford, passed away peacefully at home on September 21, 2022.  She was born November 18, 1930, in Stamford, CT, one of seven children of Mr. and Mrs. Asa W. Scanlon.  She was married to Carmine Uva for almost 60 years.  They had two sons, Bill and Jimmy.  She lived in and loved Stamford for 80 years.  She graduated Mother of God Academy 1948 and Stamford Hospital School of Nursing as an RN 1951. Kathleen loved and enjoyed her nursing career for 60 years. She was very proud of the 1000-hour pin she earned. She retired at the age of 80 from Greenwich Woods Health Care Center after 20 years as Night Supervisor and was affectionately known as “Sarge”.

She was a member and past president of Stamford Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association and an active member of Saint Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary. Kathleen loved her work and helping people.  She took great pride in doing her best at everything she did.

Kathleen was a member of St. Cecilia Church in Stamford, the Father Myron Miller Columbiettes and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.  In Southbury, she was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Monsignor William J. Collins Council 5066 Columbiettes, Women’s Club, Senior Center, Italian Renaissance Club, Men’s Club and continued to square dance with the Rocking Roosters.  She was secretary of her condo board and served as Board member.

Kathleen loved to sing, dance and travel.  She and her husband square danced with the Stamford Square Dance Club and several other area local clubs for 15 years, with Al Brundage the local caller. Their dancing took them to many places such as  Danbury Fair yearly, Massachusetts (Jug End Barn), Grand Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Hawaii and danced at the opening of the National Country and Western show at Madison Square Garden and the World’s Fair.

Kathleen loved being Irish and every St. Patrick’s Day relatives and friends all received the family’s secret recipe homemade Irish Soda Bread.  Her family celebrated by attending the St. Patrick’s Day parade and hosting many parties at their home which included the Irish Dancers.

Family was everything to Kathleen, and she was devoted to them. In 1992 Bill and his wife, Holly, gave birth to Kathleen H. Uva – her only granddaughter.  Over the years she and her granddaughter traveled the world including but not limited to California, Italy, Paris and Alaska.  Kathleen was the light of her grandmother’s life.  Never a day went by that she didn’t call her grandmother or was with her. The garden of love that grew in her heart was for her cherished granddaughter, who sustained her and gave her hope. 

Kathleen embraced life and all its challenges with grace and determination.  After her husband’s death, she moved to Heritage Village in Southbury, CT with her son William (Bill) and her granddaughter, Kathleen.  She loved her life at Heritage Village with so many wonderful friends and happy times. She loved all the birds, chipmunks, flowers and many new friends and their dogs.  There was never a dull moment at Heritage Village.

She was predeceased by her husband Carmine, sons William (Bill) and James (Jimmy), her sister Ida Mae DeLeo, brothers Asa, James, Jack and Robert.

Kathleen is survived by her brother Richard Scanlon, her granddaughter Kathleen and daughter-in-law Holly Uva, many beautiful in laws, nieces and nephews, her loving nephew, Jim Terlizzo, Evelyn and Dr. Richard Boldrighini and her many friends.

Kathleen will be long-remembered for her smiles, laughter and tears.  She will be deeply missed and forever loved. . The viewing  will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 from 4- 8 pm at The Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home 104 Myrtle Ave., Stamford, CT (203)-359-9999. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at The Church of St. Cecilia 1184 Newfield Avenue Stamford, Ct.  The Interment will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery, Stamford.  In lieu of flowers please make a donation to either The United Services Organization (USO) attn: Doners Services P.O.
