Obituary of Doris H. Carlton

Doris H. Carlton, 92, of Stamford CT, passed quietly in the early hours of Friday, July 16th, 2021.  Born in the Bronx, NY, on May 2, 1929 to Esther and Jacob Cohen, she was very proud of her New York heritage. 

Educated at Hunter College, she then gained a Masters in Mathematics from the University of Michigan, Doris forged a career as a computer programmer in the 1950's working on the then-new IBM mainframe systems. She was married in 1965 to Cyrus M. Carlton (deceased), and they settled in Stamford in 1970. 

Her beloved children are Paula O'Brien (deceased), Thomas, and Peter and his wife Sandra Carlton. Her grandson James brought her great joy.  In her later years, Doris spent many hours as a volunteer reading tutor at Stamford’s Hart Elementary School, as well as a part-time worker at Stamford's Ferguson library and volunteer attendant at the Friends of the Ferguson bookstore.  Many who met her remember her quiet, kind manner and quick wit. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, with whom Doris was long active.  A private memorial service will be held by the family.
