Peter the drummer and occasional singer anchored the legendary Stately Wayne Manor in the early 80s. He was one of my first roommates in Brooklyn. He loved to draw people out and encourage and nurture their talents. He did not suffer fools gladly, yet he had a gentle side for those whose vulnerability he sensed. He loved having fun and generously helped produce my band, adding guest vocals and sweet effects. He whooped the loudest and longest when we played (poorly) in dive bars, and unfailing lit you up with his energy, a smile, an aperçu, a sarcastic laugh at some idiocy. He had many gifts. I’m so sad our lives diverged when I left NYC. I think of Peter when I hear the music he loved—sixties/psychedelic pop with sweet harmonies. He had a golden ear and sang so well. We had great times together. RIP my old roomie and condolences to your family and loved ones at the loss of your company.

Peter Xavier Walsh was a good friend in high school, college, and the first few chapters of our adulthood. I came into his orbit during our high school spring musical: Oklahoma! in 1982. He was a Sophomore. I was a Freshman. He had a part, I was more of an extra. We were both drawn to the same girl. She liked him more, but I didn’t blame her.
Peter was absolutely and always his own person: inquisitive, dryly hilarious, wound up, savvy, mysterious, unflappable, gifted as a writer and performer, and oh what a storyteller. There’s this Jack Kerouac poem about Charlie Parker that has a line: “How sweet a story it is when you hear Charlie Parker tell it.” That’s what listening to Peter was to me. He had a captivating, conspiratorial style. Whether he was recounting the time he got picked up hitchhiking in Fairfield by Leonard Bernstein or explaining the Hutu/Tutsi conflict in Rwanda, Peter made you think that he was imparting to you and you alone the secrets of the universe. He may well have embellished a detail from time to time, but it was only in the service of a good story.
Peter Walsh was a great artist with an eye and ear for the details. He will be deeply missed. My heart goes out to his family.
I wrote a longer tribute to Peter that focuses on his high school days (didn't want to use up too much space here):

I met Peter in the Brittany Dorm Basement at NYU. He came to the audition for Hypnolovewheel. I had no idea at the time just how talented he was and am still processing his abilities and the impact he had on my life. The band was our initial connection but friendship swiftly followed. At the time I remember thinking this guy is my new best friend. Heres an early photo of us after a particularly sweaty rehearsal. I probably knew Peter for a couple weeks at this point. From the photo it feels to me like we grew up together. So grateful I got to share this part of my life with him. Crazy to see how young , healthy and blissed out we all were. Thats the power of making music together, being creative together and being fortunate enough in finding like minded souls. What are the odds? Lucky, lucky, lucky to have met him. Safe travels to you Peter. Love Stephen

The wonderful tributes here speak to the great intelligence, sensitivity and creativity we all bore witness to in Peter. Who didn't want to capture a bit more of his attention, knowing it was bestowed with thoughtfulness and generosity? From his days in HypnoLoveWheel and Special Pillow, to a decade or more of co-hosting the best New Year's Day party in the 5 boroughs, Peter was a force worth noting and knowing. We miss him. Love to all his friends and family. Hope to see all at the Fall/Winter tribute.

Peter was the one his cousins flocked to at a party. Talking to him was always fun and interesting. He was a humble, loving, great person and will be so very missed.

Peter Walsh hired me in the mid-90's to work at Hello World. Like most things related to Peter, it was a learning experience that was as equally entertaining as it could be grueling. I've learned professional lessons from him that I use to this day. I don't think it's possible to give him too much credit. I've seen him unhesitatingly drop everything to help countless others as well. I feel fortunate to count myself among his friends and I will miss his humor and intelligence. The planet became a little less interesting without him around.

I met Peter in 1983 in a basement & I asked him to play "a simple disco beat." He was gifted, humble, loyal, and could always read whatever was going on in my head. Even from miles away. As Tim Soter shared, he'd be the friend that would help you through a loss. But sadly not this time. I will really miss him.

I met Peter back in 1999and that party continued ever since. I absolutely loved talking to Peter and making him laugh. We talked about every three weeks, on the phone and I joked that it was our unrecorded podcast. He attended my 50th birthday Zoom this past February and I was delighted, because it might have taken him some effort, not knowing who else would be on the call. A private person often, I understood it and felt extra appreciative that he made it AND told a good story of us nearly curling up on the sofa once a week to watch season after season of Gilmore Girls. He was smiling and laughing through the whole Zoom. I miss him and think of him every single day. I SO wish I could keep talking to him. There was NO one else like him.

Peter was an English major at Uconn when I met him and already a prolific short story writer, filmmaker, and musician and just a civilized, decent, generous soul with a deeply gratifying sense of humor. Here he is with his sought-after band the Flying Nuns in 1986, Storrs, Ct. Love to his friends and family. Jennifer Hare

Here is a picture that I took of Peter when we were suite mates during my freshman year of college. He taught me a great deal about art, music, and film. I’ve the next 3 decades he helped me out immeasurably.
