Obituary of Gertrude B Shapiro

Gertrude B. Shapiro (nee Berkman), a long-time resident of Stamford, CT, who was born in Oconto, Wisconsin, passed away in her sleep on Saturday, January 30th just 12 days after the death of her husband of 74 years, Marvin L. Shapiro. She is survived by her 3 children, Susan, Barbara and Jonathan (“Jody”) (fiancé Annette), as well as two granddaughters, Jennifer (Michael) and Casie (Josh) and four great grandchildren, Madison, Everly, Scout and Ellis, all of whom she loved very much. She is also survived by a sister, Jane Feld of Syracuse, NY. Mrs. Shapiro was the 2^nd youngest of eight children born to her mother, Lena Anna and her father Levi Joshua Berkman and was pre-deceased by her six other brothers and sisters. Mrs. Shapiro grew up in Syracuse, NY with her many brothers and sisters and attended Syracuse University, although she married her husband, Marvin, before graduating.  However, Mrs. Shapiro never lost her joy of learning and was an avid reader of books that she borrowed from the Ferguson Library through its bookmobile service on a regular basis. She read mostly fiction and continued to do so until a few weeks before her death.  Mrs. Shapiro was also a loyal reader of the local newspaper, The Stamford Advocate, so she could keep up with local affairs. Over the years, she also continued her education through attending and participating in many different courses given at the University of Connecticut (Stamford branch), mostly related to Judiasm and/or the Bible, which she greatly enjoyed.  Mrs. Shapiro was a full-time homemaker who chauffeured her 3 children to various activities through the years and even served (at the same time!) as a Cub Scout Den Mother for her son, Jody, and an Assistant Girl Scout Leader for her daughter, Barbara.  No matter how many activities to which Mrs. Shapiro took her children during their childhood years, she always found time to cook a healthy dinner for her family, which continued even after her children grew up and it was just she and her husband at home. Recently, when in-person visiting was no longer possible, she immensely enjoyed seeing her four great grandchildren on FaceTime. A private interment was held.
