Julie Barker
Not knowing that her battle with health issues had recently returned, it’s hard for me to accept the passing of Julie Barker. I reach out to Andy, Zack, her sisters, and the rest of Julie’s family and friends with my thoughts and prayers.
Julie always offered everyone the love of life, comradery, and joy. While too many people trod through life, like myself, Julie Barker went through it as if she was dancing on water, with nary a ripple —except for the one that was part of her smile. That big ripple was always in action. Julie loved to laugh.
She relished the art of joking about herself, but rarely about others. She also had that rare quality of being able to listen to people while remaining engaging and calm, no matter how much she might have wanted to throw up. I think she once told me that.
As an Editor, Julie was a great boss. Whatever the situation, she had that level head and serene demeanor. The doom of missing a magazine’s closing deadline? There was never yelling or blaming. Julie calmly rolled up her sleeves and worked to help get everything done. And with our magazine being sold over and over, Julie was always loyal in having our backs, even as each new owner wanted to make changes. Then Julie left to freelance and worked on her book.
I think back to the many lunches with her and Terri Hardin at Sushi Park, enjoying the restaurant’s year-round “Anniversary Specials.” Julie sat between Terri and myself —two opinionated cranks —yet, no matter how loud it became, by lunches end we all had cemented a future date to dine again. That was because of Julie. She was like glue. And, even though she didn’t like raw fish, we ate there again, again, and again. Then Terry moved out west, Julie became rooted in Connecticut, and then Sushi Park blew up. The site is now a luxury condo.
Julie was our angel in life. Now she is in heaven where angels make home. On a calm and clear day you might see her dancing amongst the clouds above, and watching over us. She has our backs.

My first memories of Julie are from our Sophomore year at Marymount in Santa Barbara as 7 day boarders. That memorable experience (!) launched a friendship over the years that I have cherished. Julie has been like a sister to me and I will miss her every day. Rest in peace dear Julie.

Julie the activist! We marched together in the 2014 People’s Climate March in NYC - calling for action but people watching at the same time. Julie the family person traveled up to Canada to visit as many summers as possible. She loved to see the energy and activity of the next generation of cousins as they raced around Bayfield. Julie the doggie lover and sibling. Just a few memories.
