I had the privilege of serving as Rande’s speech therapist during the final year of his battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. He constantly exceeded everybody’s expectations and didn’t let the weakening of his body overtake the strength of his personality and resolve to live his life the way he wanted, as much as was possible under the circumstances. I think the will to live his best life was clearly illustrated by his openness to trying new therapy techniques and communication methods, and never giving up. I grew up in a maritime culture, so I understand something about the stubbornness and fierce need for independence that comes with being a sailor. Reading his biography, it’s clear that Rande accomplished so much in his life, but PSP was perhaps his greatest challenge. Even as his speech and ability to eat waned, Rande was able to teach me so much about PSP, which will forever be a part of my clinical practice. I am incredibly grateful that I was permitted to be a part of his life. To paraphrase William Ernest Henley “He was the master of his fate, and the captain of his soul”. Be at peace, Rande.
