Obituary of Joseph David Waxberg

Dr. Joseph Waxberg passed quietly in his home in New Canaan, July 14, 2014. at the age of 92. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Carol Waxberg, their two sons, Charles of Seattle, Washington and Dr. Jonathan and Anita Waxberg of New Canaan and three granddaughters, Sara, Jenny and Alison. His older sister Anne, 95, resides in Florida and his two brothers Ben and Harry preceded him. Services were led by Rabbi Marc Golub at Shippan's Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home followed by a memory-provoking lunch at Cafe Silvium next door. Dr Waxberg was born in 1922, and grew up on Hunter Mountain in the Catskills doing whatever was needed to survive the Depression. The Army put him through Iowa State College and Medical School at George Washington University. He finished his Psychiatric Residency with the Navy and served during the Korean War with the Air Force at Eglin AFB in Pensacola, FL. During his stay there, he received a citation from President Eisenhower for climbing a water tower to talk a suicidal private down. He also saved a Broadway showing of New Faces of 1952 in which Carol was starring when the lead refused to come out of the dressing room until Dr. Waxberg talked to him. He moved to Stamford in 1957 and finally into New Canaan in 1958. During his 45 years as a psychiatrist he often helped the police in forensic profiling. He created, founded, sold the advertisements, edited and published the trade magazines Dental Management and Optometric Management, eventually selling to Harcourt Brace. He published the book "Bypass", a guide to getting through cardiac surgery from a physician as patient perspective in 1981. He served on the board of Cornerstone Bank. As a Fifty-five year member of Rockrimmon Country club, his colorful mannerisms on and off the golf course will be missed. He described himself as: "dark, smokey leather, soaked in scotch." Loved by his family and friends we will all miss Dr. Joe, Dad, PopPop. www.gallagherfuneralhome.com Read Dr. Joseph Waxberg's Obituary and Guestbook on gallagherfuneralhome.com.
