Obituary of Ruth M. Carriero

Ruth M. Carriero, of Stamford CT and long time resident of Port Chester, NY passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family after a lengthy respiratory illness on May 23, 2014. Ruth was born on August 5, 1932 to Martha and Dennis Fortin. She was the youngest daughter of 7 siblings. She began her humble beginnings in Scott's Corners, NY until the family moved to Liberty Street in Stamford, CT. In 1948, she was introduced to her to love of her life, William J. Carriero. They were married on July 22, 1950 and began their journey of life and love together. Ruth and Bill, a painting and carpentry contractor, eventually made Port Chester, NY their home and raised 5 children together. From the early days, gathering with extended family was the centerpiece of their lives. Blessings grew to include many grandchildren. Ruth and Bill were devoted to each other until his death in 1991. After being a homemaker to her husband and children, Ruth returned to the workforce as a waitress at landmark local establishments like the Marina, Neilson's, and Souvalki Famous Pizza Restaurant from which she retired in 1993. Ruth was an avid bowler, winning many awards over the years. She was a crossword and word puzzle expert, enjoyed bird watching and collecting bird figurines. Undoubtedly, she will most notably be remembered as an excellent cook and baker. Her accomplishments in the kitchen will fondly be remembered as Ruthie's best. Ruth remained devoted to her family, especially her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and garnering the respect and admiration of all those who know her. Ruth is survived by her children, Deborah Tambascio, William D. "Brot" Carriero, both of Stamford, CT, Philip Carriero of Greenwich, CT, and Teri Kopp (William) of Southbury, CT; 8 grandchildren Robin Tambascio Perrett, Heather Carriero Corrente (Matthew), Jill Tambascio, William J. Carriero II, Nicholas Carriero, Amanda Huiban, Joseph Carriero and Hailie Kopp; 4 great grandchildren, Evan and Carly Perrett, William Corrente and Eden Carriero. She is survived by her siblings, Irene Garaffa, Shirley Pirro, Bernice Shirrey, Denis Fortin and Jerry Fortin and many adoring nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by her beloved husband William, her son Daniel (Chuckie) Carriero and a sister, Janet Sansone. Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 27 from 4-8pm at Shippan's Thomas M. Gallaghers Funeral Home, ( same building as Bosak) 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT. A Funeral mass will be held at 10:30am on May 28 at Holy Rosary Church, 22 Don Bosco Place in Port Chester, NY with interment at St. Mary's Cemetery in Rye, NY.
