Liesching family,
I wanted to take this opportunity to express my most heartfelt condolences following the passing of your dad. I have been thinking about what to write and days pass into weeks then months. This in no way is a reflection of how I felt about your dad and certainly not how I feel about you. Family to me is paramount. There is not a need of any kind whatsoever that supersedes family. My perception and experiences with your dad stick out in my mind. Richard always made a point to talk to me when our families were together. After Robbyn told me he had passed I spent a good deal of time thinking about him and the things he said to me during those times. What stands out is he always talked in controlled tones of jubilation regarding family. John, Sam and Tim were certainly blessed to have this man, Richard as a guiding force in their lives. His obituary was beautifully written. I have certainly seen “that wonderful spark in his beautiful blue eyes” when he talked about his family and his warmth, kindness and patience when with hubris I spoke of mine.
With Love,
Brandon

Reading about your Dad stirred two distinct emotions in me - deep sadness, realizing the chasmic void he leaves, and awe, thinking about all the adventure, success, fun and overall framework he left behind for family, grand kids and teammates to follow.
Clear he didn't take what life gave him - he took life, and maybe experienced each new day, or path down the rugby pitch, like it was the "first time" with his intensity, creativity, compassion and optimism?
