Obituary of Harry Weinroth

Harry Weinroth passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 22, 2018 at the age of 91. Harry was born in Sosnowiec, Poland. He was the second of six children born to Leizor (Wajnrot) Weinroth and Sala Rachia Wilczyk.
At the age of 13, he volunteered to take his father's place in a Nazi work camp shortly after the German occupation of Poland. This began a nearly six year journey through 18 Nazi concentration and death camps. With him through this ordeal was his closest lifelong friend Dave Fischel, whom he frequently recognized as instrumental to his survival. Both of his parents and his four younger siblings were murdered by the Nazis when all of the Jews in his hometown were systematically exterminated.
He was liberated from Dachau concentration camp by the U.S. Army in April 1945 along with his future brother in law, Jack Glucksman. He spent the next four years at a displaced person's camp outside of Munich Germany where he apprenticed as a watchmaker and met his future wife Luba Kerschenblat.
In 1949, he left Germany for the United States with Sofi, his only surviving sibling, her husband Jack and their son Morris. They settled and spent the remainder of their lives in Stamford, Connecticut. Within weeks of his arrival in the U.S. he opened Harry's Watch Repair (renamed Bedford Jewelers) which continues to operate under the direction of his children Larry and Ruth. Harry was reunited with Luba in 1951 and married her in New York City in 1952.
Harry loved to interact with people. Whether it was his family, customers or waiters, he was quick with a joke or a self deprecating line. His face lit up around small children, especially his grand kids. He absolutely adored his wife and spent 65 years telling anyone who would listen that he was married to the best woman in the world. He was a hard worker who dedicated his life to providing for his family.
Harry is survived by Luba, his wife of 65 years; His three children, Larry of Stamford, Ruth (Adatto) of Stamford and Seth of Southborough, Massachusetts; His daughters in law Hillary Weinroth, Dina Gardner-Weinroth and son in law Jerry Adatto; His four grandchildren Derek Weinroth, Marc Weinroth, Jake Weinroth and Nicole Weinroth. He was predeceased by his sisters Sofi and Frieda as well as his brothers Srulek, Alek and Josel.
A memorial service will be held at Congregation Agudath Sholom 301 Strawberry Hill Ave., Stamford on Wednesday, January 24 at 10:00 a.m. Immediately followed by interment at Congregation Agudath Sholom Cemetery at 554 West Hill Road, Stamford. The Weinroth family will then receive guests at Edgehill Senior Living Community at 122 Palmers Hill Road, Stamford. The family will sit Shiva at Edgehill between 4:00 - 8:00 on Thursday and from 2:00 - 4:00 on Friday.
