Obituary of Austin James Macniven

Austin James Macniven, 78, of Stratford and formally of Stamford, passed away after a battle with lung cancer on April 17, 2014. He was born in Perth, Scotland on September 6, 1935 to James Davidson Macniven and Annie Strathearn Young (Clark) Macniven. As a young boy, Austin worked with his father who managed a butcher shop in Perth. From there he served apprenticeship with Mackay Decorators, a well known painting and wall-papering company in Scotland. Austin then served in the British Army for 2 years with most of his time spent in Germany and after, he played soccer for Newburgh FC in Fife. On August 22, 1969, Austin married Margaret Helen McNicol (of Perth) in Perth, Scotland. The following December, he immigrated to Stamford, CT and was a painting and wall-papering contractor.â�,�¯He also spent some time coaching Stamford Youth Hockey and played soccer as a member of the German Club. Austin is predeceased by his wife Margaret. He is survived by his son, Scott Macniven, wife Patty and granddaughter Ryan of Stratford, CT. Brother, Sandy Macniven and wife Sheila; Niece Lesley Macniven and her son Paul Dickie; Niece Claire and husband Chris Wardlaw; Nephew David Macniven, wife Lesley and great nieces Anna and Charlotte; All of whom are from Edinburgh, Scotland. Sister-in-law Patricia and husband Anthony Martello of Riverside, CT. Calling hours will be held at Shippan's Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home (same building as Bosak Funeral Home) 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford on Thursday, April 24th from 4 to 7pm, with a family service to be held in Scotland at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Stamford Youth Hockey Association or The Swedish Exchange Program c/o Patty Healy 27 Cousins Road Stamford, CT 06903.
