I go back with Joe to our early days at Stamford High School, our involvement in local politics, and our joint efforts in our teachers' union.
Especially memorable was our long stay at Rippowam High School; it was an honor to have him on my staff.
I will miss our many coffee chats at Tully Center café in between our workouts,(unfortunately we had more coffee breaks than workouts).
I will treasure forever his book of poetry that he gave me as a lasting gift.
With sympathy,
Art Iacuzio

Joe was a tough guy with a tender heart. I don’t believe I would have ever said that to his face. He had a brilliant mind and a memory that bordered on photographic. You couldn’t win an argument with him because all the facts were stored in that steel trap mind just waiting to be called upon. His wife Marion was my hero because if Joe was tearing my argument to shreds, she could call him to quiet with a word. I worked with Joe at Rippowam and he was a teacher’s teacher. His lectures could mesmerize students. If you waked out of his class after a year and weren’t a more knowledge person for it, then the shame was on you. There were times I found myself stuck on understanding something that I was expected to teach, so I would seek out Joe and ask him if he could help me out; he always did. With his perpetual crew cut, Joe always looked like he just stepped out of the marines, and upon first meeting him, that look could make some nervous. He did like to show off his strength on occasion, and I recall when he was asked if he could help out a friend with some tree trimming. He was no spring-chicken at the time and watching him swing on lines and wield a chainsaw in midair like it was a toy, scared several of us as we were worried for him. No need, he was just having fun. Joe seemed to keep his softer self to himself and only once shared a heart-breaking confidence; and it seemed to give him some relief, I hope so. After he retired from teaching, we drifted apart as he had another life to live. I hope he lived it well. My condolences to his family.

John Bridge was the most memorable teacher I had at Rippowam. It's hard to imagine his enthusiasm for literature gone. All my best, Dana

A very tough teacher but one who taught us so very much. He gave us so very many memories. I have thought of him with great warmth over the years as under the gruff exterior there was a special human being.
