Obituary of Zelda Finkel

Zelda Finkel age 93, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2017 at home after a long illness. She had resided in Stamford, CT for the past 12 years at the Wormser Congregate Care residence.  She was previously a resident of Staten Island, NY for 40 years.

Born in Brooklyn, NY to Benjamin and Frances Abrams,  she attended New York City Public Schools and graduated from James Madison High School, Brooklyn, New York.  She retired from the State of New York, Department of Labor on Staten Island in 1983.

Zelda was pre-deceased by her husband Hyman Finkel.  She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Lewis and Laurie of Stamford, CT, Ben and Cindy of Austin, TX and Harvey and Beatrice of Philadelphia, PA. and her  grandsons  and wives:  Hal and Quinn of Chicago, IL , Andrew and Laura of Chicago, IL and David and Matthew  both  of New York, NY; great-grandchildren Marion, Lucille, Herbert and Leonard.  She is also survived by her sisters Evelyn Davidson, Del Ray Beach, FL, and Dorothy Schlesinger of Sarasota, FL and her brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Jean Abrams of Sarasota, FL.  and many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Zelda was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was renown with family and friends for her baking skills. Zelda always had an endless supply of cookies with her specialty being her famous nutbread, a family favorite. A dynamic woman who was a wonderful friend to all she met – always greeting everyone with her engaging smile and wishing them Good Morning. She volunteered to over-see improving the food served at the Wormser residence for the past several years making sure that the offerings were both nutritious and tasty.  She was able to travel the world with her sisters after she retired but she most enjoyed being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Special thanks to her physician Dr. Alan Falkoff, her  home health aide Titilayo Salami, who provided extraordinary care both physically and spiritually and became part of Zelda’s family, and Patricia Craig, RN from Vitas Hospice who provided wonderful care and support to Zelda’s family during her final days.
