Obituary of Daniel Joseph Murphy
Daniel J. Murphy “Uncle Shorty” passed away at 90 years of age on March 17, 2017 in Venice, FL surrounded by his family. He was born in Stamford on March 13, 1927 to the late William J. & Anna (Boyle) Murphy. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Frieda Schreiber Murphy, a brother William Murphy and sister Ann “Sis” Flannery. He is survived by his children Sharon McGovern & husband Noel of Trumbull, Daniel J. Murphy, Jr. and Patricia L. Murphy of Nokomis, Fl a grandson Terence D. McGovern of Trumbull and two sisters Jean Davis and Joan Potts both of Nokomis, Fl. And several nieces and nephews.
He left high school to join the Navy and served during World War II. After an honorable discharge he joined the Plumbers Union and was later reactivated into service during the Korean Conflict. While still in the service he was appointed to the Stamford Police Department raising to the rank of Detective and was a member of the Police Scuba Team. After retiring from the police force he returned to the plumbing trade.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Police Anchor Club, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Fairfield Gaelic American Club, and Benevolent & Protective Order of the Elks. He recently transferred his membership in the VFW and American Legion to a post in Venice, Fl .
Proud of his Irish heritage Dan and Frieda started the first Irish Feis in Stamford for the AOH which they ran for many memorable years
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. John’s Basilica 279 Atlantic St, Stamford on April 1, 2017 at 10 a.m. Friends may call at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home (next to Knights of Columbus), Friday, March 31st between 4 pm and 8 pm. Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Springdale.
