Obituary of James F. Bingham

The Honorable James F. Bingham died peacefully at his home, at the age of 88. Born in Spring Lake, NJ on February 10, 1925, he was the only son of Colonel Sidney Bingham and Ruth Bingham. He has been a resident of Stamford for 80 years, having moved to his current home in 1933. After graduating from Stamford High School, he attended The Citadel. Between 1943 and 1946 he served in the U.S. Navy. James completed his undergraduate degree at Fordham University (1947) and attended Fordham Law School, graduating with his LL.B. in 1950. Bingham also served for three terms in the House of Representatives for the 157th District between 1969 and 1974. During his terms in the HOR, he was chairman of the Judiciary Committee. He also served on the Law Revision Commission. In 1983, James was appointed a Superior Court Judge. In 1987, Chief Justice Ellen Peters named Bingham to chair the Criminal Sanctions Task Force. Many of their recommendations were adopted by the General Assembly by 1990. In 1992, Chief Court Administrator, Judge Aaron Ment, appointed Bingham to the position of Administrative Judge of the Stamford-Norwalk Judicial District. He fully retired from the bench in 2008. He is survived by four children-Consuelo, Victoria, James, and Julia. Their mother, Consuelo Mira, pre-deceased him in 2005 and his son, William Bingham, also pre-deceased him in 2011. His second wife, Gretchen Gardner Bingham died in 1993. Family and friends may call on Friday, November 22, 2013 from 4 pm-8 pm at Shippan's Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home (same facility as Bosak Funeral Home) 453 Shippan Avenue, Stamford, CT. A Service of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Saint Francis Episcopal Church, 2810 Long Ridge Rd, Stamford, CT (203) 322-2949 at 1 pm with Reverend Mark Lingle and Monsignor Peter Dora co-celebrating. A reception will follow immediately in Assisi Hall at St. Francis Church. Interment will be private.
