Obituary of Elinor M. Georgopulo

Elinor M Georgopulo, age 96, of Edgehill Residence, Stamford, CT, formerly of Westport, CT, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2023.

Born on October 13, 1926, in Lawrence, MA, she was the beloved daughter of the late William and Sabina Cahill.  Elinor attended Abbot Academy in Andover, MA and then Barnard College (BA 1948), where she majored in French and Music.  She then headed to Paris to work for the State Department at the US Embassy from 1949 to 1952.  Upon returning to New York in 1953, Elinor worked for the President of Chanel Perfumes for the next 8 years.  While continuing to work, Elinor returned to school at night and earned an MA from the New School for Social Research and an EdD from Yeshiva University.  She soon became a licensed Clinical Psychologist and worked as an individual and family therapist for over 30 years. Once Elinor retired from psychology, she volunteered with the Hospitality Committee at the United Nations Delegation, and the Domestic Violence Crisis Center in Norwalk, CT, took Italian lessons and attended NYU Business School for Continuing Ed.  She had passions for politics, education, doing the NY Times crossword puzzle, and knitting (including knitting pink hats for the Women’s March in Washington DC in 2017).  Her biggest love was her grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Granny El.”

Elinor is survived by her loving daughter Katina and her son-in-law Ted Burke of Riverside, CT, her three loving grandchildren Michael, Katherine & William Burke, and her seven nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband Panos in 1989.

Burial will be private.
