Obituary of Bernice G. Lang

Bernice Gelb Lang, age 100, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 13, 2023, at her home in Stamford. Bernice is survived by her son Richard who lived with her and cared for Bernice, which enabled her to remain in the home where she had lived for almost her entire life. She is also survived by her son Edward and his spouse Pamela and by her grandchildren Samantha, Colin and Rachel Lang. Bernice was predeceased by her parents Morris and Bessie (Betheil) Gelb, her husband Ira, her brother Oscar Gelb, and by her group of women friends who were supportive of and supported by Bernice throughout their lives.

Bernice was an excellent and enthusiastic bookkeeper and demonstrated her strength and independence, working for Dress Barn in its early days. She and Ira founded I and L Sales Co., a wholesale food distributing business. At Ira's death she ran, managed and kept the business going. Upon selling the company, she worked for many years at The Homestead Inn in Greenwich. She enjoyed her weekly lunches, mahjong and card games with her close female friends. She enjoyed all the culture Stamford offered. Bernice was an active volunteer in Stamford. She drove voters to the polls on Election days, she knit baby blankets for new babies and was a reading tutor for elementary students.

Bernice was an active member of Congregation Agudath Sholom. She was an early leader in the Couples Club and Sisterhood and was an early supporter and active member of The Bi Cultural Day School community. She enjoyed hosting holiday family gatherings, and her religious traditions and celebrations were deeply meaningful to her.

Bernice's family acknowledges the kind care provided to Bernice in her final years by Yveline Dorlean and a special thanks to Laura Harper for her loyalty, care and support for Bernice and Richard.

In lieu of food or meals, please make a donation in Bernice's name to Congregation Agudath Sholom, The Bi Cultural Hebrew Academy, or the charity of your choice.
