Obituary of Estelle Metviner

Dr. Estelle Metviner

Estelle Metviner, a resident of The Greens at Cannondale, passed away on May 1, 2023 at the age of 88.

Estelle was born July 27 1934 to Israel and Sara Schostack in the Bronx, NY.  A daughter of immigrants, her early years were spent surrounded by a loving extended family and engrossed in learning.

After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree from the City College of New York (CCNY), Estelle began her teaching career in the NYC public school system.  But besides gaining a degree, Estelle found true and everlasting love at CCNY and in 1954 married Irwin Metviner, a fellow student whom she met on a city bus while returning to their mutual Bronx neighborhood.

Estelle and Irwin were happily married for 65 years until his passing in 2019.  She was also predeceased by her parents Israel and Sara, and brothers, Seymour and Leonard.

In 1957, she and Irwin relocated from New York to Stamford where they welcomed their first child, Neil, and over the next 7 years added sons Jonathan, Alexander, David, and (finally) a daughter, Monica.  In 1963, the growing family moved to Norwalk.

Estelle was an amazing mother and a fantastic educator, and as soon as her children were school age, she returned to the classroom as both teacher and student.  Estelle became “Dr. Metviner” upon earning her PHD in education administration from UCONN.  Full time wife, mother, teacher, doctoral student…Estelle could (and did) do it all.

Over her long career, thousands of children attended Dr. Metviner’s English classes at Brian McMahon and Norwalk High School and after a very brief “retirement” still more were lucky enough to experience her gift as she taught 8th grade English to the students at Bi-Cultural Day School for over another decade.

During her career, Dr. Metviner also served as head of the language arts department across the Norwalk high schools and later as a HouseMaster at Norwalk High.  She also founded Instructional Curriculum Center (ICC) which focused on SAT preparation and college counseling.  And along the way she earned acceptance into Mensa and started to play golf.  She was a member of Silvermine Golf Club for over 30 years.

In 2007, she and Irwin began their snowbird lives, wintering in Tamarac Florida and returning each spring to Norwalk.  It was a wonderful time for both of them.

In addition to her five children, Estelle is survived by 14 grandchildren.:  Amanda (Scott Schimmel), Aaron, Marla, Hannah, Miles, Nate, Elliot, Joshua, Kayleigh (Josh Zaloga), Skyler, Sierra, and the Blatt brothers, Sumner, Ethan and Tobyn.

Estelle is also survived by three great grandchildren:  Scarlett and Devyn Schimmel and a baby boy, son of Kayleigh and Josh Zaloga, who arrived just hours after her passing.

A funeral service was held on May 2nd, followed by shiva that day.

Dr Estelle Metviner left the world a better place and is an inspiration to all she touched.

Donations can be made in her name to Teach For America or the charity of your choice.
