Obituary of John James McGovern, Sr.

John “Johnny” James McGovern, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, Thursday, the 23rd of February 2023. He was born on November 24th, 1943 in Glangevlin, County Cavan, Ireland. Johnny was the 13th out of of 14 children born to Edward Charles and Roseanne McGovern. Johnny is survived by his loving wife Angela, his proud children Johnny, Maureen, Michael and wife Melissa, and adoring grandchildren Reilly, Stephen, and Quinn. In addition, his surviving siblings Anna, Helen Devlan, Agnes Clifford and her husband Thomas as well as many nieces and nephews who adored him.

In addition to his parents, Johnny was predeceased by his son Stephen, sisters Peggy Dean, Marie McCormick, Brigid McManus, Kate Roth and brothers Terrance, Eamon, Tommy, Phil, Charles, and Patrick.

Johnny emigrated to the US in 1965.  Served in the US Army, 173rd Airbourne, Vietnam before settling in Greenwich, CT where he met and married his wife Angela in 1971. Johnny was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  Johnny worked in the local Carpenters’ Union before starting his own construction business in the late 70’s. Johnny was passionate and lived his life spending time with his family, supporting the Irish community, his fellow veterans, playing music, and playing golf.  He is a self-taught musician; he played the tin whistle and accordion. At the age of 40 he started playing the bag pipes with the Greenwich Pipe Band. He played many weddings, funerals, and parades. He has led the annual St Patrick’s day flag raising procession in Stamford, CT for almost 40 years.   

Johnny was a member of the Knights of Columbus, VFW, Greenwich Pipe Band, Thistle Club (Golf Club), The Church of St. Cecilia in Stamford, CT

Johnny will be greatly missed. His kindness, generosity, sense of humor and his bright blue eyes. Can’t be replaced.  

A Viewing will be held at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home at 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT 06902 on Thursday, March 2nd, 2023 from 4PM – 8PM. A Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at The Church of St. Cecilia, located at 1184 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT 06905 on Friday, March 3rd, 2023, at 10:30A.M. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Johnny McGovern to House of Heroes, Connecticut, 3342 Whitney Avenue, Hamden, CT 06518 http://hohct.org
