Obituary of Paul Martin Kaplan

Paul Martin Kaplan, Ph.D., 76, of Greenwich, CT, passed away on December 29, 2022, at his residence after a 22-month battle with cancer.

Dr. Kaplan was born on February 25, 1946, in Los Angeles, CA, son of Manuel and Anne Kaplan (Kilstein).  Known as a loveable rascal in his childhood, he preferred Little League to piano lessons.  Educated at UCLA, Baylor University, and Stanford University, he later went on to become an award-winning scientist and researcher.  Over the years, Dr. Kaplan lived in California, Texas, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and finally Connecticut.  He worked for many high-profile companies, such as Johnson & Johnson, Centocor, Affymetrix, and L2 Diagnostics.

He loved classical music and photography, was a “cat person,” and enjoyed strolling through the lush forests of the Greenwich bird sanctuary.  Always a generous and charitable spirit, after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Paul traveled to Louisiana with Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild homes for those displaced in the disaster.

His favorite color was sunny yellow, and his favorite flower, which he often photographed, was the ephemeral water lily.

He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Barry (who died as a child before Paul was born).  He is survived by his beloved wife Deena, previous wife Sue, heartbroken daughter Lori and her husband Georg, stepsons Max and Ben, precious grandchildren Sam and Charlotte (whom he and Deena once took with them on vacation all the way to London!), sister Norma and her husband Gene, nephew Marc, nieces Amy and Wendy, and numerous cherished cousins.
