Obituary of Irene Hogan DeCamp

Irene Therese Hogan DeCamp passed into Eternal Rest on January 12, 2023 with her family by her side. Her life was one of faith, love, and achievement.
Irene was born in Stamford, Connecticut on October 30, 1934 to the late Patrick J. Hogan and Margaret M. Hogan. She enjoyed an ideally happy childhood.
She attended Rogers School and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy, class of 1952, and the Katherine Gibbs School in New York City in 1954. For many years, she was executive assistant to the General Counsel at GTE in Stamford, the company’s world headquarters at the time. She later began a second career as a librarian and educator at the Brunswick School in Greenwich.

Irene was a woman of intellectual curiosity and many talents. A voracious reader, her facility with words made her a great conversationalist and skilled writer. Impressively tech-savvy for her generation, she was an early adopter of cell phones and personal computers. She was bold and fun; she loved to play the piano, dance, and laugh. She introduced her nieces and nephews to Johnny Cash, Mustang convertibles, and hot fudge sundaes at Howard Johnson’s. Adept with her hands, she excelled at sewing, needlework, crocheting, and knitting, and many family members received handmade gifts at birthdays and Christmas.
Irene was a devout Catholic, and this was mirrored in her home and activities in three Stamford parishes: St. Mary’s, St. John’s, and Our Lady Star of the Sea. As part of Project Children, she and her husband hosted several children from Northern Ireland to spend summers at their home. She was committed to helping and encouraging others.

Irene lived in Stamford most of her life until she and her husband retired to Cape Cod 26 years ago. They loved their new home and made many new friends. They spent countless hours at the beach; joined community activities, such as Brewster in Bloom; and took visitors on long drives around the Cape. Irene joined a regular Bridge group and volunteered at the St. Joan of Arc Church thrift shop in Orleans for many years. Irene worked to make her house beautiful and gardens abundant. Friends and family were always invited.

Irene loved to travel both at home and abroad. She visited the Vatican in Rome several times. Her favorite place to travel was Ireland, which she first visited in 1960 and almost every year thereafter, being proud of her Irish heritage and lovingly devoted to her dozens of Irish cousins.
In addition to her parents, Irene was predeceased by her husband Ronald A. DeCamp, her brothers John J. Hogan and Francis P. Hogan, and her brother-in-law W. Patrick Ryan.

She is survived by her sister Margaret H. Ryan (Honey); eight nieces, Elizabeth Ryan Lane, Margaret Ryan Massimi, Sharon Ryan LaCrosse, Denise Ryan, Janet Hogan McMullen, Paula Hogan, Carolyn Hogan Leary, and Jennifer Hogan Thornton; five nephews, Patrick Ryan, Thomas Ryan, James Ryan, Kieran Ryan, and Patrick Hogan; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie S. Hogan and Margaret Hogan; many cousins; 27 great nieces and nephews; and her dear friend Gary King.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 20, 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 1200 Shippan Avenue, Stamford. Friends and family may call beforehand at the Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Interment will follow the Mass at St. John’s Cemetery in Darien.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Irene to the Maryknoll Missions, Maryknoll, New York 10545.
