Obituary of William Philip Sabia

William P. Sabia, 64, of Ridgefield, CT, and a former resident of Stamford, passed away on Friday, July 1, 2022, surrounded by his family at his home after a hard-fought battle with cancer.  William “Bill” was born in Stamford to Phyllis R. (Tedeschi) and William A. Sabia and was the oldest of three siblings, Allison (John) Doherty and the late Diane “Dee” Calabrese. He married Cathleen (McGlynn) in Ridgefield and was a devoted husband for 37 years. Together they raised two children: son William “Billy” Richard and daughter Michelle Lynn.

Bill graduated from Stamford High School in 1975, where he passionately played football (in emulation of his late father) and was a friend to many. He completed a post-graduate year at St. Thomas Moore Prep before attending Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Ornamental Horticulture in 1980. Pursuing his passion for horticulture, in 1987, he started Environmental Site Developers, a full-service landscape development and maintenance company. He loved his clients and devoted colleagues, which once included his late mother, Phyllis, who worked as the office secretary. Bill recently retired, appointing his son, William R. Sabia, as President of the company.  Bill was a proud father who always encouraged and rooted for his children and their friends in life and sports, never missing a hockey game (for Billy) or soccer game (for Michelle). He was a deeply compassionate and loyal friend and had an infectious love of life. Some of his favorite pastimes included: visiting Saratoga Springs for the horse racing season, fiercely rooting for the NY Mets and NY Giants (another inherited passion from his father), visiting family in Florida, trips to the beach, listening to live music, skiing in Lake Tahoe, and having a ball at Mohegan Sun. Most of all, he loved good food and time spent with his family and friends. Bill smiled often, and everyone in his life will profoundly miss his kind-hearted and reassuring presence.

Bill is survived by his wife Cathy, son Billy & his wife Emily, daughter Michelle, sister Ali & husband John Doherty, his uncle Bobby and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 7, from 4-8 PM at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home: 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, CT (203)-359-999. In lieu of flowers, the Sabia family requests donations be made in Bill’s name to The American Cancer Society https://www.cancer.org/
