How To Write A Condolence Letter

At Sholom Chapel, we understand that there are never enough words to comfort a grieving friend or relative. Although there are numerous ways of communicating condolences, taking the time to send a thoughtful condolence letter/card adds a personalized feel when we cannot express ourselves in a better way.

A handwritten note allows one to acknowledge a loss, pay tribute to the deceased, and recognize a friend or relative's grief. In addition to providing individual solace, a simple note is an excellent way to show families support at a crucial time.

Being genuine, empathetic, and sincere is crucial when composing a condolence letter. Recognize that everyone's journey through grief is distinct, and avoid phrases like "for the best" and "everything happens for a reason."

Helpful Tips To Compose A Condolence Letter

When composing a purposeful condolence letter, use these components:

1. Refer To The Departed By Name

Be straightforward and allude to the decedent by name in your note. Saying and hearing the person's name can solace the grief-stricken individual and remind people of their presence.

2. Include A Line Stating The Obvious In Your Letter Of Condolence

You may feel compelled to keep your note brief and vague to avoid overwhelming the grieving person, but you should consider highlighting something unique about the deceased. When you add personal information, your message will feel much more heartfelt.

Consider sharing a practical and specific action you can take to help your grieving friend or family member instead of a vague offer of support. Instead of saying, "I'm here for everything you need," you could ask, "May I bring you an evening meal on the weekend?" "

3. End Your Condolence Letter Using An Expression Of Sympathy

Instead of standard letter sign-offs, including "sincerely," "love," or "thoughts of you," try something a little more active: "You are in my prayers and thoughts," "I’m here to support you," or "I am with you in presence and prayer." These phrases help to emphasize your ongoing support as the families navigate their loss. It is an excellent way to tell them you are there when you need them, without encroaching upon their privacy and thoughts when they are grief-stricken.
