Coping with the Loss of a Pet

Pets are our companions and it is easy to underestimate just how much grief we can experience if they die. At Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home, we encourage people to grieve for the loss of a pet and take their pain seriously. Most people try to suppress their pain and feel it is silly to be sad about an animal’s demise. Here are some tips on how you can cope with the loss of a pet:

1. Take Your Grief Seriously

If you lose an animal companion, the grief can be intense and devastating. People often isolate themselves to deal with their pain or try to suppress what you feel. It is healthier to accept the grief and acknowledge the loss of a loyal companion. You deserve it and your pet deserves it as well.

2. Reach Out to Other Pet Owners

No one can understand your grief better than pet owners who have already been in this position before. Reach out to them and share your loss. They will offer compassion, comfort, and understanding. Pet owners are unlikely to dismiss your concerns outright and will offer advice on how to deal with grief. You can talk with them, share memories of your pet, cry on their shoulder, or just bask in their presence.

3. Create a Memorial

A memorial is a way to honor a loyal companion and ensure you have something to remember them by. You can bury their ashes in your backyard, plant a tree in their honor, create an album dedicated to your pet, and so much more. A memorial can help you heal and ensure the pet is always remembered.

If you want to know more about funerals or want to plan one, don’t hesitate to call us at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home for more information.
