I Have Pre-Planned At One Funeral Home, Can I Switch Funeral Homes

It isn’t uncommon for people today to preplan their funeral and there are many different reasons for this choice. Some have very fixed views about how they want their funeral to be conducted after their death, while others want to avoid the possibility of disagreements among their family members about the type of service to be conducted. A funeral involves a significant investment and there are some people that prefer to pay for their funeral rather than burden their family with this responsibility and expense.

When you pre-plan, you have to discuss your requirements and preferences with the funeral director at a funeral home of your choice. They will provide you details about all the services available and will guide your choices. Some establishments also have packages that you can select from. Once you have made your choice, you are required to sign a contract and make the payment as per the services chosen by you. That price gets locked in.

Switching to Another Funeral Home

Once someone plans and pays for their funeral at a particular establishment, they rarely move to another one. But there are certain situations in which they may have no option but to do so. Sometimes they need to switch because they are moving to another city or town, In some cases, they find that the services some other home is providing are better than the previous one.

Most well-established funeral homes give clients the option to switch but may charge a certain fee or penalties. If you are pre-planning your funeral, it’s a good idea to check whether the establishment permits this kind of change and that it is mentioned in the contract you sign.
