Dealing With Sudden Death

The death of a loved one is always a shock, even if you expect it. However, sudden death is a different sort of pain. Families often struggle to come to terms with such an abrupt loss and don't know how to deal with it. At Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home, we have seen several families struggle with such a situation and offer the following advice:

1. Accept the Emotional Upheaval

It is natural to focus your energies on the more vulnerable family members like children or senior parents during this challenging time, but don't ignore your grief. Slipping into a caretaker mindset immediately after such a significant trauma can have long-term consequences on your mental health. Don’t hesitate to let someone else handle the responsibility as you take some time to adjust.

2. Ask for Help

Sudden death can have a significant impact on a family's overall stability. You may need emotional, practical, and financial support. Don't let pride get in the way of asking for some assistance. Accept help from people willing to offer it and reach out when you are in need. There’s no shame in relying on friends or family while suffering through tragedy.

3. Seek Counseling

Sudden death can be traumatic, especially if it happens due to suicide or violence. People left behind have to find ways of coping with the shock. Professional counselling can help by offering coping mechanisms, trauma assistance, and other such advice. Many grieving individuals believe they can overcome their pain without assistance, but find themselves spiralling. Regular counselling, along with healthy habits, can keep you from developing mental health concerns as a result of this trauma.

If you want to know more about grief or funerals or want to plan one, don’t hesitate to call us at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home for more information.
