Choosing An Urn

If you have chosen cremation for a family member who has passed away, the ashes that the crematorium hands over to you would have to be kept in a container. The best way to store the ashes is to get an urn. You have the option to either bury the urn, place it in a particular area in your house, or even bury it in your backyard.

Choose The Right Urn

Regardless of what you are planning to do, it is essential to choose the right kind of urn. There are different types to choose from and some of the things you need to keep in view while selecting one include:

  • The size is one of the first factors you would need to take into account. In most instances, the remains would weigh between 3 to 7 pounds, and the crematorium or funeral home would be able to give you an estimate about the size of urn you would need.
  • If you decide that you want to keep the urn at a cemetery in a columbarium, it's essential to check whether they have any specifications in terms of size.
  • You can choose one made of wood, bronze, copper, granite, marble, glass, ceramic, etc. The aesthetic aspect is something that you can keep in view if it is a priority for you.
  • If the remains have to be carried overseas some other destination by air, it is best to opt for an urn made of glass. This will ensure you do not encounter any hurdle at the airport and the urn can be run quickly through the X-ray machine

It is a good idea to get some advice from the funeral director about the types of urns that are available. They will understand what your specific needs are and help you make the right choice.
