If a loved one has just been diagnosed with a terminal illness, you may feel like your whole world is coming crashing down on you. While it is extremely difficult to deal with the untimely death of a loved one, knowing that someone very close to you is not going to survive for very long can be even more painful.

Some Pointers

If you are wondering how to cope with the situation like this here are some things you can keep in view.

  • Communication is a very big aspect of coping. Often you may feel that you need to protect one another and may defer discussing painful subjects. While it is very important to have respect for the other's way of coping, it might help to talk things out. When you are communicative and talk openly about what you are going through, it can help you to cope with the situation in a better way.
  • It can also take a significant amount of energy actually to hold back your feelings. If you are open with each other, it can free up some of that energy and help you live better for the time that you have with the other person.
  • Be proactive with asking your loved one to share their feelings about the things that are happening. Be prepared for emotional swings and always try to live in the moment. It's also very important to make some time for both of you to talk about what things are most important and relevant to each of you.

It may not always be easy to have these conversations, and sometimes it can also lead to upset and stress. However, if you continue to be focused on what you mean to the other person, it can help you prepare for the loss in a better way.
