Coping with Memories of Grief and Loss During the Holidays

Holidays are usually a time for joy, family gatherings, music and shopping. But these appear to lose their importance when you have lost a loved one, are overwhelmed with grief and face a huge loss in life. What you really need to do during this difficult time is to take control of yourself. Have a look at some strategies that will help you to manage your grief and loss.

Look After Yourself

Grieving is normal after the death of a loved one. It differs from one individual to another. So try to look at your strong points in order to face it. It may be like a very short holiday to some place where you spent time with your loved one. Refresh your memories of the time spent and you may feel relieved of the pain. In the meanwhile the holidays will pass.

Volunteer For A Cause

When grief seems to overtake you, it is important not to wallow in it but look around to others in need of your help. Your kindness towards others will be self-healing. The type of volunteering you do is your personal choice. You may like to give presents to the disadvantaged because your loved one cared for them. But whatever you do will lift your spirits during the holidays.

A Memory Box

Memories are a treasure. So prepare a memory box and start putting in papers with your memories about the loved one written on them. Ask your friends to contribute their memories and organize a reading session during the holidays. The loss will turn into a new memory.

If you have any ideas for coping with grief during the holidays, we'd love to hear them. Tell us in the comments below.
