How To Talk To Your Loved Ones About Your Final Wishes

Discussing aspects such as death or even your final wishes with family and close friends a difficult task. Most people don’t really know how to broach the topic with loved ones. At times, just the thought of having this discussion can prove to be a stress point for many. Here we list a few pointers that can help ease the process:

1. Draw Out A List

It’s a good idea to start by creating a list. Jot down everything you want to discuss with your family. This will help you have a calm discussion without going off track. While it’s true that tempers can sometimes flare due to disagreements, when you have specific things to discuss, it helps reduce the chances of this occurring.

2. Choose A Comfortable Setting

It can be very difficult to conduct discussions related to your final wishes with multiple people. It’s a far better idea to request all the relevant family members to a convenient place where you can have this discussion comfortably. It's important that you get everyone at the same location at the same time, rather than conducting multiple meetings.

3. Be Clear About Your Wishes

Each one of your family members and loved ones will have something to say when you have an end of life discussion with them. It isn’t uncommon for some family members to urge you to make a different choice. However, if you have made up your mind and know exactly what you want, it’s important that you maintain your stand. While you do this, keep an open mind as well. It’s possible that a family member may come up with a plan that suits your preferences better.
