When the time comes to organize and conduct a funeral, many people will come to experienced professionals, like us here at Gallagher Funeral Home. When this happens, one of the people that will be seen on a regular basis is called a Funeral Director. Who is this person, and why are they so prevalent during this process?

The Port in the Storm

The death of a loved one is a painful, emotional period for everyone. But by coming to a funeral home, you get the benefit of someone who is not only experienced with these unfamiliar proceedings; they can provide the calm, measured voice of support required for organizing a funeral. This is the funeral director, and as the name implies, this is the person that will take the bereaved through the process of arranging a funeral.

The funeral director has both administrative and legal privileges to help clients better. There is paperwork and other legal documents that need to be filled and submitted. A funeral director knows what to do with these forms. If there were no plans for how to conduct the funeral, a funeral director could offer an array of choices and options, making sound recommendations based on preference.

The Benefit of Experience

The funeral director also has both the knowledge and the contacts to organize the exact mechanics of a funeral, getting in touch with and confirming burial or cremation arrangements, transportation, and negotiating with all the necessary service providers. In other words, the familiarity of the funeral director with the professionals in this industry makes it easy to organize a smooth, efficient experience. In some cases, a funeral director may also be the one responsible for the embalming process that prepares the deceased for a viewing during the actual funeral service.

A funeral director can also be helpful ahead of time. For those that want to spare their loved ones the burden of planning a funeral after death has occurred, arranging the details in advance is handled by a funeral director. When you meet with the funeral director, you can specify all the elements such as burial or cremation, handling of payment, selection of cremation or burial site, even the type of music you would like to have played, if any.

In many ways, the funeral director is the person that takes the most painful logistical burdens of death away from the people who are at their most vulnerable at this time. And in addition to all this, they provide compassion and support in addition to organizational assistance.

Gallagher Funeral Home has years of experience helping people through this difficult period, and our funeral director is ready and willing to help you at this time.
