Choosing the Perfect Songs for the Funeral Service

Music isn’t just for parties or festivals, it can also set the right environment at funerals. At Gallagher Funeral Home, we have seen how good music can help grieving individuals, offering comfort in their time of pain. It’s important to choose songs carefully because many aren’t appropriate for solemn occasions. Here are some things to keep in mind:

1. Always Pay Attention to Lyrics

Some lyrics offer comfort and soothe pain while others are unfit for funeral services. For example, playing a party anthem is unwise and will cause great offense. Sometimes songs sound serious enough to be used in funerals but the lyrics aren’t appropriate. It’s easy to find lyrics of any music online with a simple Google search. Just read through them carefully before making a choice.

2. Add a Personal Touch

Choosing a deceased individual’s favorite band, genre or album is a great way to add a personal touch. Go through the decedent’s music collection or make a list of songs they enjoyed, examine lyrics, consider their rhythm, before making your choice. Make sure the music isn’t overly loud or jovial.

3. Instrumentals

This is the safest bet because there are no lyrics to cause offense. Classical instrumental pieces are elegant, meaningful, and impactful. If you choose a good piece, it will set the right tone for a funeral service. Some classical instrumental music is actually written for funerals or mourning so you won’t have to look far.

Good music will provide a calm, almost serene atmosphere during a service, which will help with the healing process. If you’re still uncertain, consult with a funeral director and ask them for recommendations.
