Honoring and Coping with the Loss of a Loved One

Dealing with the loss of a loved one isn’t an easy proposition; even when the person is ill or dies of old age and you try to prepare yourself for the imminent grief, when the time comes to deal with the person’s death, you are never ready. That person’s absence leaves you with an emptiness that can become very difficult to deal with.

We at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home understand this and recognize that everyone deals with his or her loss differently.  Here are some ways in which you can cope with your grief and honor the memory of your loved one.

1. Do Not Try to Ignore the Pain and Grief

Family members, friends, and guests will sometimes tell you that you need to pick up the pieces and move on with your life. They may tell you that you have dependents to care for and that you need to be calm and strong for them. While it’s true that you need to be there during this difficult hour, it’s vital that you deal with the pain you are feeling as well. It's never a good idea to try to forge ahead as if nothing has happened.

2. Take Care of Yourself

Grief can sometimes be all-consuming and can make you ignore how your body is reacting and how emotionally affected you are. People often forget that they need to do basic things like step out of the house for a walk, sleep and eat regularly. This can affect your health, both mental and physical. It’s important that you find the time to listen to some music, relax and even meet up with friends. This will help take your mind off your grief for some time.
