How Does Compounded Grief Affect our Coping Abilities?

Grief is a difficult emotion to cope with. Making it even harder is the fact that it tends to build on itself. This spiral can be hard to avoid, with many of us being more susceptible than others. Moving on can be hard as many people see it as forgetting the past. Grief can lead down a rough rabbit hole of despair and depression if not checked early on. If you or someone you know if suffering from compounded grief you should be aware of its detrimentral effects on our coping abilities.

It must be said that grief is a perfectly natural and welcome part of life and, in this case, death. Our grief keeps us grounded and helps us to develop mechanisms that allow us to cope and move on. Sometimes, however, grief can be so overwhelming that it is carried far past its benefits and begins causing serious harm to your health and well-being. If you find it hard to pick yourself back up after experiencing the loss of a loved one or feel yourself potentially slipping towards despair, you should absolutely reach out for help. Far from being a sign of weakness, it will allow you to receive the support you need.

Often just knowing that there are others who feel the same way you do is enough to help begin the healing process. Other times, seeking professional help is the only way to overcome such intense negative emotions. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to hold you head up high, remain strong, and not let their passing negatively affect your health. They would want you to carry on and stay strong. If you need a helping hand along the way, that's okay too.

If you or someone you know is experiencing signs of compounded grief, please reach out to Thomas Gallagher Funeral Home. We are here to help and will answer any questions you may have.
