Qualities to Look for in a Good Funeral Home

In the midst of grief and pain, there is the need to ensure that your loved one gets the perfect send-off; one that will have peace, dignity, and the respect to celebrate a life well-lived. Choosing a funeral home is an important decision. Let’s examine some of the qualities to look for in a funeral home.

Trustworthy & Reputable

These two somewhat go hand-in-hand because to have trust means that the home has a good reputation. You need to have implicit trust because you are leaving your loved one in the care of the home’s staff between death and burial or cremation. It’s important to know that your loved one’s remains are being treated with dignity. Do some research to review policies and procedures, look at online reviews, and even more important, spend time speaking to the funeral director or curator to have them answer specific questions. You must feel totally confident with that home

Respect

Respect is conveyed on many levels from the cleanliness of the facilities, the demeanor of the staff, and the organization of the funeral service. Always inspect a funeral home first to be sure it is what you feel is right for your family.

Child-Friendly Services

If you have children, you should choose a funeral home which allows children to visit and say goodbye to their family members. Funerals can be a very difficult time for children, but not bringing them will create issues for them and possibly other challenges. Be sure to check out how a funeral home helps to manage children. For example, do they have a separate area where a family member can go to with the child when the child needs close attention?

Counseling Skills

Funeral home staff should have excellent counseling skills because they are in the position of being called upon to lend support to family members and friends of the deceased. The last thing you need is to deal with a staff member who is quite insensitive.

Family Involvement

The level of involvement that the funeral home allows the family to have is imperative. For the memorial service, you might want to have the setting adorned with the deceased’s favorite flowers, pre-chosen casket, and methods of sympathy expression. You may want to have memorial boards with photos of the deceased. A quality funeral home will plan the service for you, but they’ll also take into account your wishes and requirements and keep you in the loop throughout the entire process.

Choosing a funeral home is an important decision that should leave everyone feeling comfortable. Be sure to ask questions and choose the right funeral home for your needs.
