Special Ways To Remember A Loved One During The Holiday Season

Loved ones play a significant role in and shape every component of our lives. Humans are social creatures who form strong bonds with one another and suffer greatly when those bonds are lost. For this reason, the holiday season is a particularly difficult time for those who experience this kind of pain, as it is traditionally a time of joyous gatherings with loved ones.

Our experience at Thomas Gallagher Funeral Home has shown us that funerals and other traditions tend to bring up painful memories in people who have experienced the death of a loved one. The following are some suggestions to remember a loved one over the holiday season:

Different Ways To Remember A Loved One During The Holiday Season

The holidays can be particularly difficult for those who are still grieving the loss of a loved one. This is how we can celebrate our loved ones and heal from the loss during the holiday season:

1. Avoid Rushing Through The Grieving Process

You should allow the grieving process to move at its own pace. Some people can get over their grief in a matter of months, while others require more time. There is no wrong way to grieve as long as you or those around you are safe. Relax and skip the festivities if you're not in the holiday spirit. Most people in your inner circle will understand if you need some alone time and will provide it if you decide to take a break.

2. Create New Experiences

During the holiday season, memories of happy times spent with a deceased loved one could be a major source of distress. It can be extremely difficult to continue with the same celebratory rituals and get-togethers after the death of a loved one. Making new memories is also a great way to let go of old ones. You can take a break from your regular routine and go exploring during the holidays. If you are unable to spend time with family, try to spend it with friends who are not related to the deceased. This will help you create wonderful new memories.

3. Make Your Own New Holiday Customs

When celebrating holidays with your loved ones, consider starting new traditions that will help you remember a loved one more positively. You can do things like finish an item on their bucket list, make a charitable contribution in their memory or revisit activities you once shared with them that they loved. Establishing new holiday traditions to honor their memory can help ease the pain of your loss.
