Do You Still Have To Wear Black To A Funeral Or Memorial?

Funeral attire can be tricky for those who have never attended one before. We get asked, "Should we wear black to the funeral?". To avoid disrespecting the deceased and their family and look your best, you must adhere to a strict dress code. Don't wear t-shirts and jeans, but don't overdo it with formal clothes. You can follow these tips from Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home regarding how to dress for a funeral.

You Don't Have To Wear Black To A Funeral.

Black has long been associated with mourning in Western culture because of its association with somberness. This does not imply that you must wear all black or a suit to the funeral. You can also wear other colors that aren't too bright or distracting. Among the inappropriate colors for funerals are red, yellow, and pink, all brighter than the rest.

On the other hand, colors like dark grey, deep blue, darker green, white, and beige are sometimes acceptable choices. If you don't have any black clothes, you can always choose something in a muted color that will still look good in a professional setting. Also, avoid patterns and prints that could be considered distracting. When you can, wear muted colors and conservative patterns.

Keep The Setting In Mind

When it comes to choosing an outfit for a funeral or memorial service, several things need to be taken into consideration. However, funerals held in a garden or on a beach are less formal affairs, so formal black attire isn't always required. In some cultures, white or crimson is used as a mourning color. You might be able to make an informed choice about your attire by seeking advice from people with similar cultural backgrounds.
