What Is Unconventional Grief?

Every individual deals with grief and sorrow in various ways, and when it comes to the kinds of grief you can experience, there are no rules. It's important to find certain ways to cope with your loss and pain. There's one form of grief that many individuals don't really recognize or acknowledge — unconventional grief.

Some Things to Remember

At Gallagher Funeral Home, we firmly believe that recovery from unconventional grief is important, as it can create a lot of complications along the way. Here are a few things to bear in mind:

  • Unconventional grief refers to the sadness you feel for a person who is still living and suffering from a serious diseases or illness.

  • You may have this kind of sorrow, even when you know that an elderly person in your family is nearing the end of their life.

  • When we're dealing with anyone around us, we're in sync with their personalities and character. If a person is very close to death, these things will shift dramatically. It makes us feel distant from them, which creates enormous sorrow. This is called unconventional grief.

  • You can't come to terms that everything you knew and loved in that person has disappeared completely. You also feel confused and are unable to comfort yourself in any way.

  • You might experience grief when you see a loved one struggling with things such as distress, severe mental illness, alcohol dependence, opioid addiction, family loss, brain injury, or degenerative disorders such as PTSD, etc.

This kind of unconventional grief can be difficult to cope with and needs to be resolved by communicating with those around you. It’s the best way to deal with something you don’t have control over.
